Why Choose Synergy

On-Time Filing, Every Time

HST returns are due monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on your filing period. We track your deadlines and file on time — avoiding late-filing penalties (up to 10% of the net tax owing) and interest charges.

Maximize Input Tax Credits

Input Tax Credits (ITCs) allow you to recover the HST you paid on business purchases. Many business owners miss ITCs on eligible expenses. We ensure every qualifying ITC is claimed, reducing your net HST remittance.

Rebate Recovery

Certain transactions — including new home purchases, substantial renovations, and non-resident rebates — qualify for HST rebates that many people miss. We identify and file all applicable rebate claims on your behalf.

Audit-Ready Records

CRA HST audits are among the most common business audits in Canada. We maintain your HST records in audit-ready format — organized invoice documentation, ITC support schedules, and reconciled HST accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

When must I register for HST?

You must register for HST when your total revenues from taxable supplies exceed $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or in the four preceding consecutive calendar quarters. Once you cross this threshold, registration is mandatory. Voluntary registration is available before you reach $30,000, which allows you to claim ITCs on business startup costs — often a smart move for new businesses with significant upfront expenses.

What are Input Tax Credits and how do I claim them?

Input Tax Credits (ITCs) allow registered HST businesses to recover the HST they paid on purchases and expenses used to make taxable supplies. For example, if you paid $130 including $13 HST on a business supply, you can claim that $13 as an ITC to offset your HST collected from clients. ITCs can only be claimed by registered businesses, and proper invoices must be retained to support each claim. Specific documentation rules apply depending on the dollar amount of the purchase.

What is the HST New Housing Rebate?

The HST New Housing Rebate allows buyers of new homes or substantially renovated properties to recover a portion of the HST paid. For Ontario, the rebate has two components: a federal rebate of up to $6,300 and an Ontario provincial rebate of up to $24,000, subject to purchase price thresholds. The rebate may be assigned to the builder at closing or claimed directly by the purchaser. We help buyers calculate, structure, and file their rebate applications correctly.

What happens if I missed filing HST returns?

Late or unfiled HST returns result in penalties of up to 10% of the net tax owing plus compounding daily interest. If you have multiple unfiled periods, the Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP) may allow you to file all outstanding returns while reducing or eliminating penalties. Acting before CRA contacts you is critical — once CRA initiates contact on a specific period, VDP relief is no longer available for that period.
